ˇ´Preface

ˇ@ˇ@The development of economy and society in Mainland China has prompted international concern in 21st century. China research has also joined the mainstream in the international and Taiwan academic community. Since the connection between the two straits has become closer, studies on the development of Chinaˇ¦s politics, economy, and society is more important to Taiwan. Therefore, relative courses and research should be enhanced within campus.
ˇ@ˇ@NDHU is located on the east coast of Taiwan. Compared to the universities on the west coast, the research resources we have are much fewer. In order to take an important part in this field with the limited resources, we plan to develop our teaching and research through the cooperation among the Institute of Public Administration, the Department of Economics and Institute of International Economics, the College of Management, and the College of Indigenous Studies.

ˇ´Missions
1. Prepare and activate an undergraduate interdisciplinary program for mainland China studies to produce outstanding researchers in this field.
2. Promote researches on the economy, politics, and social law of mainland China.
3. Propel academic interaction and cooperation.
4. Encourage our faculty to carry out relevant researches and to publish the fruits of their researches in domestic or international journals.

ˇ@ˇ@By integrating human and equipment resources within NDHU, we expect to enhance our researches and to improve our international reputation and leadership in the field of China research.

Research Group on Creative Writing and Multicultural Studies

ˇ´Preface

ˇ@ˇ@The MFA program launched by English Department of NDHU is the only one creative writing program in Taiwan. Since its establishment in 2000, it has attracted many outstanding scholars to join. The students have won significant literary prizes in the country and risen to prominence among the emerging writers of today. The success of our MFA program in teaching and research has won national recognition from the academic community as well.
ˇ@ˇ@In order to take the leadership in providing the best educational environment for creative writing, English Department with the resources from Chinese Department is dedicated to promoting the undergraduate interdisciplinary program for creative writing and multi-cultural studies. Moreover, it will form the research group to publish a journal of creative writing and cultural critique, stretching its impact onto the society.

ˇ´Missions
1. Organize the research group focusing on Cultural Studies, Ecological Literature, The Fantastic Literature, Contemporary Literature/Cultural Criticism, and Creative Cross-Medium Writing. We plan to establish a platform for academic interaction by means of forming/joining study groups and sharing teaching resources between departments and colleges. The results of our research will be exchanged and shared in mini-seminars.
2. Periodically hold nationwide and even worldwide seminars.
3. Engage distinguished domestic and foreign scholars to lead the research into creative writing and multicultural studies.
4. Publish a quarterly carrying research papers or literary and cultural critiques of originality.
ˇ´Goals
1. Develop into a leading centre for the study of writing in the Chinese world.
2. Become an interdisciplinary center both for academic research and cultural production with the interest in modern thoughts and multi-culture.
3. Be an influential force in modern fine culture by publishing a first-rate periodical featuring creative writing and literary/cultural criticism.
